This project explores a mode of collaboration between AI based technology and analog style collage art. Using an AI program that creates imagery by sourcing from a database of images, and uses human input to sort the information, I created images of what AI thought “collage art” would look like. These images then being used to inform the analog art. Vintage magazines, art history books, and textures were curated then scanned into the computer to be used in a digital collage.

Using Photoshop software, digital collages were created using pieces from the scanned items that referenced the AI generated original pieces. These pieces were then edited to reference back to analog mark–making practices (stamp language). The pieces are laid out side–by–side, images on the left are AI generated and the images on the right are the end product of the experimental collaboration between AI and artist.

how can you translate tech into physical art? at what point does the concept get lost in translation? does it ever completely lose it’s message or does it simply change the direction of the overall conversation? can ai generated concept work still hold meaning in the art world or does it forgo authenticity and credibility with the loss of intent?
